Keeping the kids occupied during the summer vacations can be a real challenge, and when you add a dog to the mix, it’s even harder to find something to keep everyone entertained. Here are some ideas for things to do that are suitable for every day, come rain or shine.
Enjoy a picnic
A picnic can be enjoyed whatever the weather, whether you’re enjoying some finger food in bright sunshine or a platter of food in the living room in the pouring rain. There are lots of fun games that can be played alongside a picnic, from fetch in the park to a simple game of hide and seek indoors.
Visit a dog show
It’s summer and that means there will be lots of festivals, fairs and exhibitions over the next few weeks – so why not take part in a dog competition?
Will your dog be crowned the most beautiful dog or has the most wagging tail? Most shows offer a child-friendly competition where the whole family has the chance to win a rosette or two.
New tricks
Why not teach your children to teach your dog a new trick? It can take hours, if not days, and it’s a great sense of achievement when they’ve done it.
There are plenty of how-to videos on YouTube that will show you how to teach your best friend new skills – you may need to help with some things and he may need some encouragement, but it’s all worth it in the end.
Play hide and seek
Who doesn’t love a good game of hide and seek? Your dog needs to be able to sit and stay well, unless there is someone to hold the dog while everyone hides. Then just call for your dog and see who is crowned the ultimate hide and seek champion.
Make a date to play
Do you have a friend at school who also has a bored child and an energetic puppy, or maybe your neighbor is surrounded by kids and pooches who also need to be entertained? Why not arrange a play date where dogs and kids can burn off excess energy?
Going out
We always forget how much children love the great outdoors, there’s nothing better. Plan a trip to the beach or a walk in the woods where everyone can let off steam and enjoy each other’s company. After all, they say the best things in life are free.
