Safety when jogging with your dog

Having a dog as a training partner can motivate you on the days when you don’t feel like running, strengthen the bond between the two of you and make any run, however boring, fun! There are a few things to consider before you grab the leash and put on your running shoes. We’ve put together a few tips to help you run safely with your pet.

What you should consider before going for a run with your dog

Age and state of health of your dog

If your dog is a little older, overweight or has health problems, it is best to talk to your vet before you go jogging or running with your dog. They can give you the all-clear or give you specific advice on your dog’s health.

If your dog is still a puppy, he will not be able to walk until he is fully grown, as his bones and joints are still developing.

The length and distance of the run

If you are an experienced runner, you are probably used to longer distances and all types of terrain, but if your dog is new to the running scene, he will need to work up to your level. Choose shorter and flatter routes to start with and increase as you and your dog progress.

If you walk the route before the run, you can prepare yourself for the difficulty of the terrain, plan breaks and recognize possible dangers.

The speed he can manage

Try not to overtax your dog while running and run at his pace instead of trying to match him to your pace. This will make the run much more fun for everyone involved.

Time to warm up and cool down

When you schedule time for your run, don’t forget to include time to warm up and cool down. We humans know how painful it is the next day if we skip these important steps, and they are just as important for our four-legged friends.
